How To Get The Most Out Of Marriage Counselling

You have decided it’s time to seek help for your marriage. There is a time commitment and a financial commitment. Certainly you will want to get the most out of your sessions. Here are a few tips that can help you get the most out of your time with me.

  1. Be Open and Transparent: Share as much information as possible with me. Be transparent. Talk about the positives as well as we will build on those too. Therapy sessions isn’t just a complaining session.

  2. Don’t Expect Growth in Every Session: Each therapy session should build on the overall goals of therapy but you may not experience earth-shattering perspectives that are new or immense growth from every single session. Be patient. If, however, you are not feeling like there has been much change after a few sessions bring it up. Be transparent and let’s talk about it.

  3. Learn and Practice Skills: Therapists should teach practical skills and help you integrate them into your daily life. Understanding alone isn’t enough; change happens when insights lead to new behaviors. Do the homework that is assigned to you.

  4. Set Clear Goals: Define specific goals for therapy. What do you want to achieve? Communicate these goals with me and work toward them.

  5. Commit to Attendance: Consistency matters for successful outcomes.

  6. Be Patient and Persistent: Marriage therapy takes time. Don’t give up after a few sessions.
